Tomas Alvarez

St. Paul, MN

I'm Tomas Alvarez, a fine art photographer, educator, and creative mentor based in Saint Paul, Minnesota. To be perfectly honest, I never expected to become an artist. I studied computer programming and built a career in technology before photography gradually became one of the most important parts of my life. Today, I spend much of my creative time exploring landscapes and cities, looking for interesting light, unfamiliar perspectives, and moments worth remembering. My work often involves long exposures, capturing the movement of water, clouds, and city lights in ways that reflect how I experienced a place. Photography has taken me to remarkable places, introduced me to wonderful people, and taught me to appreciate the world a little differently. My work has been featured in exhibitions, publications, and photography competitions, and in 2027 I'll be exhibiting seventeen photographs at the Minnesota State Capitol in From Shore to Skyline. Along the way, I discovered something else I love: teaching. I enjoy helping photographers understand their equipment, develop their creative instincts, and build confidence in their abilities. My approach is conversational, practical, and focused on learning through experience. I believe there's tremendous value in getting out with a camera, experimenting, making mistakes, and discovering what works for you. Whether we're exploring the North Shore, photographing city lights, or talking through a creative challenge, I want you to leave with more than a few good photographs. I want you to feel inspired to keep learning, exploring, and creating. And hopefully, have a wonderful time doing it.
